Small accents, big impact — How to properly use decorative pieces.
Most people associate "redecorating a room" with new furniture, a fresh coat of paint, or a complete overhaul. However, it's often the small things that make the biggest difference. A single, thoughtfully placed decorative piece can change the entire atmosphere of a room.
The Rule of Three
One of the simplest styling rules: arrange objects in groups of three. Our eyes find odd numbers more harmonious and interesting. Three objects of different heights on a shelf or sideboard – it immediately looks well-considered without being forced.
For example: A travertine candle holder, next to it a simple vase with a single dried flower branch, plus a small tray with a scented candle. Three objects, a cohesive picture.
Mix Materials — But Mindfully
A common mistake: buying everything in the same material. This quickly looks monotonous. It becomes more exciting if you consciously combine materials:
- Travertine + Wood — Two natural materials that complement each other perfectly
- Cement + Linen — Raw meets soft, a beautiful contrast
- Terracotta + Glass — Warm and earthy meets light and transparent
The key is to have a common color family. If the tones match – warm beige, sand, and earthy tones, for example – you can combine various materials.
Less Is Indeed More
Resist the urge to decorate every available surface. A single strong piece on an otherwise empty sideboard is more powerful than ten small objects vying for attention.
Ask yourself with each piece: Would this room miss it if I removed it? If so, it stays. If not, get rid of it.
The Wow Moment
Every room needs exactly one focal point. No more. This could be a special vase, a striking mirror, or a candle holder with an unusual shape. That one moment where the eye lingers – that's what makes a room special.
Decoration should never look like decoration. The best rooms appear as if every piece landed there by chance – yet behind every placement lies a conscious decision.
At Auroby, we curate precisely such pieces: items that stand out on their own and yet fit into any home. Limited, hand-picked, made from genuine materials.
